As of Fall 2016, the University of California maintains three fields related to gender and sexual orientation. Those fields are as follows:
- Gender: man; woman; nonbinary
- Gender Identity: woman; transgender woman/trans woman; man; transgender man/trans man; nonbinary; different identity
- Sexual Orientation: heterosexual/straight; gay or lesbian; bisexual; not listed/other
Students may decline to answer for each field.
Only Gender data was collected for students admitted prior to Fall 2016.
Prior to Fall 2016, continuing and new graduate students do not have data collected for Sexual Orientation.
Starting Fall 2019, nonbinary was added as a category of Gender.
Starting Fall 2023, male and female are no longer used as a category of Gender and Gender Identity. Genderqueer/gender non-confirming is no longer used as a category of Gender Identity. Nonbinary has been added as a category of Gender Identity.
Updating Gender and Sexual Orientation Fields
Students may change their Gender, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation fields by submitting a request through the Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation application via StudentAccess. No validation or additional processes are required.

Data is shared with UCI offices that have a defined responsibility to provide students with gender-specific services.
