You will be assessed for full-time tuition and fees if your enrollment exceeds the allowable amount of units. If the student enrolls in more than the allotted number of units they will be billed the amount that was earlier deducted from their tuition and fees.
There are no exceptions to the enrollment limit or filing deadline dates.
Graduate students must meet the residence requirement in order to be eligible for part-time tuition and fee status. To meet the residence requirement, a minimum of four units must be completed per quarter.
Length of program
Undergraduate Students
Part-time status is granted for an academic year. It will begin with the first quarter in which the part-time status is initiated, and will remain in effect until the end of the academic year. (Spring quarter)
Examples:
- If part-time status is initiated beginning Fall quarter, it will be in effect for the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters of that academic year.
- If part-time status is initiated beginning Winter quarter, it will be in effect only for the Winter and Spring quarters of that academic year.
Students must reapply for part-time status each academic year. Part-time status will not automatically carry forward into the following academic year.

Part-time students are expected to observe the campus fee payment and
enrollment deadlines.
Students assessed with full-time tuition and fees may have the assessment changed before paying tuition and fees by submitting the Reduced Fee Part-Time Study Program online request before the fee payment deadline. Do not wait until the last day. Allow sufficient time for the review process and approval.
Petitions for part-time study may be submitted after full-time enrollment tuition and fees have been paid if the petition deadline has not passed.
- For undergraduate students the petition deadline is:

Refunds of excess tuition and fees paid will begin
processing on the Tuesday of the fourth week of
instruction. Students who receive financial aid via EFT (electronic fund
transfer) will receive their refund via EFT. Otherwise, refunds are mailed
to the student's local mailing address on record.
Students receiving financial aid should check with the
Office of Financial Aid and
Scholarships regarding the status of their refund.
Health Insurance
Undergraduate students approved for part-time status are eligible for the University's student
health insurance and may use the Student Health Center facilities. Details, including waiver information, can be
found in the health insurance section of our fees page.
Graduate students approved for part-time status are eligible for
GSHIP. Details, including waiver information, can be
found in the health insurance section of our fees page.
Financial aid and fellowships
Financial Aid
Students receiving financial aid should check with the
Office of Financial Aid and
Scholarships before petitioning for part-time status in order to determine
how their financial aid award will be affected. In most cases, part-time
enrollment affects eligibility for deferment of the repayment of student loans.
Fellowships (Graduate Students)
All university fellowships require full-time enrollment in
graduate level courses. For extramural fellowships, students must refer to
and adhere to the individual agency guidelines established by the sponsor.
Be advised that part-time status will make students ineligible for any
fellowship support that they may have received previously in the quarter for
which they are petitioning for part-time status.
