Students must complete 50 percent or more of the total quarter units earned at UCI before graduation through courses that are not designated as online or mixed modality by the University Registrar, unless exceptions have been granted to a degree program.
This requirement applies to all undergraduate students entering Fall 2023 and after, and undergraduate transfer students entering Fall 2025 and after.
Each course published on the Schedule of Classes lists a modality designation. A unit-bearing course with “Online” in the modality field indicates that all listed units will be counted as online units.
Percentages of completed online units and completed in-person units are listed on the unofficial transcript’s modality tab and in a student’s DegreeWorks account.
The following courses will not be counted toward the online or in-person modality percentages:
- Courses that are completed with the following grades: F, Incomplete, In Progress, Not Pass, No Report, Unauthorized Repeat, and Withdrawal.
- Courses taken through programs such as the University of California Education Abroad Program (UCEAP), the University of California Washington, D.C. Internship Program (UCDC), UC Online, etc.
- Courses taken through other campuses (UC or otherwise).
- Courses taken while pursuing a second baccalaureate degree.
Students should monitor their in-person and online modality percentages with the consideration that the calculations remain in flux until all coursework is completed.
Students who have completed more than 50 percent of total quarter units through online units will not be eligible to proceed with the degree certification process.
